For the rising musician, reconnecting with his roots has proved highly therapeutic. Makore recently returned from his second consecutive tour of the United Kingdom, but it is the quiet, grounding life under Chief Chipuriro in Mashonaland Central that is keeping his head level.
“I have always loved and enjoyed rural life because it defines us,” Makore shared, describing how he spends his downtime planting vegetables and watering his garden. Unlike many celebrities who lose themselves in the hype, Makore insists that fame has not changed him, choosing to hang around his old peers who he says will one day bury him.
His rural sanctuary serves a dual purpose: it is a haven from the exhausting social media battles surrounding his music catalog, and a place where he can tap into the wisdom of the elders to become a better community leader.
Goats, Greens, and Grounding
Makore's days in Guruve are spent getting his hands dirty. “I am into horticulture, planting and processing all forms of vegetables, including green beans," he explained. "I am also into goat-rearing, and I find peace of mind seeing my animals grazing well and watering my garden.”
The singer emphasized that the support he receives from his rural community is deeply encouraging. He views himself not just as an entertainer, but as a community leader who leads with dignity and pride.
Dodging the Copyright Storm
Makore's career recently hit a major speed bump when he was served with a formal cease-and-desist letter barring him from performing songs by his uncle, the legendary Thomas Mapfumo. The legal threat sparked a massive social media storm, dividing fans.
However, the Black Lions frontman appears completely determined to put the bitter family controversy behind him and focus purely on his own original catalog.
UK Triumphs and a Sungura Mentor
If there were doubts about his ability to survive without Mapfumo's songs, his recent UK tour squashed them. Makore was thrilled to see fans singing along to his original tracks. “Fans in the United Kingdom were really amazing... To have fans singing along to my own compositions was indeed a marvel to watch," he said.
He credits much of his current career stability to sungura ace Alick Macheso. “To me, superstar Macheso is a father figure... He is not only a humble man, but also a wise elder who will certainly change your life if you listen to his advice.” The two will share the stage again in Masvingo on September 11.
