Harare, Zimbabwe – Former Zimbabwe Warriors striker Shingi Kawondera's recent claims about his ex-wife, Marry Mubaiwa, and the late businessman Genius "Ginimbi" Kadungure have drawn a sharp and swift response from Mubaiwa herself.
Kawondera made headlines following an interview on DJ Ollah 7’s podcast, where he alleged Mubaiwa's involvement in his financial losses and claimed to have introduced her to Ginimbi.
A key claim made by Kawondera was regarding the relationship between Mubaiwa and Ginimbi. Speaking in Shona, Kawondera asserted that Mubaiwa and Ginimbi "didn’t know each other before" his involvement and that their relationship began through his introduction.
"Before, ndisati ndadaro, vaisazivana… Vakatozotanga kuzivana through inini," he was quoted as saying in Shona, translating to, "Before, before I did that, they didn't know each other... They only started knowing each other through me," suggesting he facilitated their initial connection.
She particularly took exception to the suggestion that she did not know Ginimbi prior to Kawondera's alleged introduction, clarifying their relationship was familial.
"How could I not have known Genius? His mother is my dad’s sister. So what is he saying? We weren’t strangers from a bottle store," she stated, emphasizing, "Genius and I were family."
Turning to Kawondera's focus on her, Mubaiwa questioned his motivation, pointing out that he had been married multiple times. "Why is he only talking about me? He was married before, married after. Why am I the only one he’s talking about? Is he looking for attention? For relevance?" she queried.
She was equally dismissive of the accusation that she was responsible for the end of his football career, stating, "How did I do that? I wasn’t involved in his football decisions. If he came back from Cyprus and couldn’t find me, what has that got to do with ending his football?"
"If he has grievances, he should go to court. Some of Genius’s properties still exist. He can approach the estate and make a formal claim," she advised.
She further highlighted the implications of claiming forgery in company changes, noting that such processes involve the Registrar of Companies. "He’s accusing the Registrar of Companies of fraud because all company changes are signed off by them. If his signature was forged, where’s the evidence?" she questioned, implying the gravity of such an accusation against government processes.
Despite the contentious exchange, Mubaiwa did acknowledge one point made by Kawondera: his positive comment about her raising their daughter well and his acknowledgment that she never prevented him from seeing their child.
The public dispute between the former spouses continues to unfold, bringing personal and business histories into the spotlight following Kawondera's podcast interview.
