More than 8,000 cases have been reported since February, with over 155 fatalities, prompting a state of emergency declaration in the capital, Harare. In response to the urgent situation, efforts are underway to tackle the outbreak and provide clean water sources to affected communities.

Drilling for Solutions

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has taken decisive action by spearheading the drilling of new boreholes in severely impacted districts like Buhera, the epicenter of the outbreak. These boreholes aim to provide access to clean and safe water, a critical step in curbing the spread of cholera. 

Health education and awareness campaigns on cholera prevention and hygiene have been launched, with door-to-door initiatives actively reaching affected provinces.

Clean Water, Safe Communities

Notably, the installation of solar-powered boreholes by Prevail, a company specializing in water solutions, is set to make a significant impact. These boreholes, equipped with chlorination mechanisms, offer a reliable supply of potable water. Villagers and community leaders have expressed gratitude for this timely intervention, recognizing its potential to improve hygiene and prevent waterborne diseases. The initiative has been particularly well received in Buhera district's Ward 15, where it is seen as a blessing, especially in the face of the ongoing cholera outbreak.

The widespread community support for the borehole initiative is evident through the positive response from village health workers, community leaders, and local residents who recognize the importance of access to clean water. Through training and awareness campaigns on waterborne diseases, these community members have played a crucial role in promoting basic hygiene practices and fostering a culture of seeking medical attention when cholera symptoms are observed.
