Early Years and Education:

Joana Mamombe was born in Harare on June 18, 1993. She completed her secondary education at Monte Cassino Girls High School before pursuing a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology at Chinhoyi University of Technology. 

During her time at university, Mamombe served as the Gender Officer for the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU). She later obtained a Master's Degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Bergen in Norway.

In the same year, she contested the parliamentary elections under the MDC Alliance and emerged as the representative for Harare West. Following her successful election on July 30, 2018, she was sworn into office as one of the youngest members of parliament in Zimbabwe.

Arrest, Treason Allegation, and Abduction:

On May 13, 2020, Mamombe and two other MDC activists, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, were abducted by masked assailants during a protest against the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The women were found two days later, severely injured and traumatized, indicating that they had been subjected to torture and sexual assault.

Legal Troubles and Denial of Bail:

Since May 2020, Mamombe and her fellow activists have faced multiple arrests and detentions. Despite appearing in court 129 times over the past 12 months, Mamombe has been repeatedly denied bail. The conditions of her bail restrict her from addressing gatherings of more than 50 people or engaging in any activity that violates COVID-19 regulations.
