South African pop singer Makhadzi has opened her own record label after her departure from Open Mic Productions.
In April, City Press reported that the award-winning musician, whose given name is Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, would not be renewing her contract with the label after the end of their three-year contract.
She shared her new business venture in a long formal statement announcing the end of her relationship with the controversial label.
The statement read:
I have taken a decision to not renew the contract with Open Mic Productions so I can focus on my own company Makhadzi Entertainment and other business ventures. We are all aware that the music career is very short, and I feel that it’s time I grew my own business and myself as an individual so that I can leave a legacy for my family and those who depend on me."Please note that Open Mic Productions will no longer represent me in terms of performance bookings and other related matters. From now on, all bookings will be handled by my own company Makhadzi Entertainment."

She said she had travelled the world and performed on prestigious stages thanks to the label.
I would like to thank Open Mic Productions for the good work and contribution they made to my music career and I have learnt a lot from them. They have really played a huge role in my growth as an individual and for that I will always appreciate the company and the good working relationship we had.
Open Mic managing director Nkateko Maluleke said: "We will not be commenting on this issue as we are contractually bound by confidentiality provisions in the agreement entered into with our artist Makhadzi."
