In a rather alarming development, a Zimbabwean carer at a rest home in Auckland, New Zealand, tested to positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

According to New Zealand Herald, the woman whose age and identity has not been disclosed, returned from Zimbabwe on March 10 before travel restrictions had been imposed.

Upon her return, she immediately resumed work and worked night shifts on March 15 and 16. She was later advised to stay at home and see a doctor after falling ill. She was then tested for Covid-19 and her results came back positive yesterday.

Heritage Life Care Group chief executive Norah Barlow confirmed the development in a statement. Barlow said as soon as they received the results they put the village into a 48-hour lock-down and have been seeking advice from the Ministry of Health.

‘This is obviously a concerning time for the residents and our team and we are providing them with appropriate support.

‘As part of our overall response to COVID-19, all our staff at Ellerslie are taking additional infection control precautions which include wearing face masks during shifts,’ she said

Family members whose relatives may have been in contact with a carer were notified of the development.

A family member of a resident, who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity lambasted the home for being careless by allowing a staff member who had arrived from overseas to return to work without getting tested.

I asked when they will start testing the residents and they said they wouldn’t, they were only isolating them.

Why are they not testing these vulnerable residents? There are at least 12 rooms on my dad’s hallway that this staff member looks after. None of them are below 65, they are all extremely old.
