Liverpool’s Senegalese forward Sadio Mané has been named 2019 African Player of the Year at the CAF Awards ceremony in Hurghada, Egypt.
The 27-year-old is part of the Liverpool side that achieved UEFA Champions League glory in 2019 as the club claimed European soccer’s most prestigious trophy for the sixth time.
This led to participation in the Club World Cup in Qatar, where Liverpool defeated Monterrey and Flamengo to be crowned world champions for the first time in its history.

Mané’s Senegal side finished runners-up in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, after which he was named in the Team of the Tournament.
He was up against Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah who had won the award in 2017 and 2018, and Manchester City attacker Riyad Mahrez who won it in 2016 whilst at Leicester City.
Salah and Mané have played a big part in Liverpool’s rise from being a club that wasn’t even in the Champions League when Jürgen Klopp arrived towards the end of 2015, to one which is now among the best in the world.
