Bongekile Simelane, otherwise known as Babes Wodumo, has weighed in on the xenophobic attacks in the country, and in her uninformed opinion, “everything would be smooth if Nigerians left South Africa.”
Babes Wodumo is a famous South African musician from KwaZulu-Natal. The singer’s well-documented and eventful life, matched with her onstage talents, has catapulted her into stardom, making her one of South Africa’s most influential artists.
She is known best for her internationally-acclaimed hit single, Wololo, and is currently signed to her manager and romantic partner, Mandla Maphumulo’s label, West Ink records.
International community condemns xenophobic attacks in South Africa
The singer’s sentiments around the xenophobic attacks in South Africa fell on the other end of the spectrum, compared to her fellow compatriot’s, Sho Madjozi.
As a result of the violence, artists who were scheduled to perform in South Africa have publicly announced that they will no longer be setting foot in the country.
Tiwa Savage, a Nigerian artist, stated that she is officially pulling out of the DStv Delicious Festival’s lineup in solidarity with the plight faced by Nigerians in South Africa.
Furthermore, while this has yet to be verified by Afropunk Festival, it is possible that Burna Boy may not be performing at the event in December after he indicated that he would never set foot in South Africa again until the government does something about xenophobia.
Wodumo’s thoughts on xenophobia in South Africa
The widespread condemnation of the xenophobic attacks we have seen over the past week has done nothing to deter Wodumo from publicly promoting the violence.
The Gqom artist tweeted that she was sick and tired of Nigerians. She claimed that they need to leave South Africa, and that the rampant scourge of drug use would not be a problem if they were to leave.
