The United States government has condemned the brutality used by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in breaking up the August 16 protests in Harare.
The police brutally assaulted people who had gathered in the Harare CBD for a protest which the ZRP themselves banned citing a security threat.
Assistant Secretary for U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs Tibor Nagy wrote on social media:
We condemn the excessive force the police used today against Zimbabweans who were seeking to demonstrate peacefully. We call on Zimbabwe’s security forces to respect human rights and to exercise restraint. #RespecttheConstitution #HumanRights.
The actions of the police were also condemned by the United Kingdom and the European Union who called on the authorities to exercise restraint as well.
One 51-year-old woman had to undergo brain surgery following life-threatening injuries she suffered after being brutally assaulted by the police while seating in the road.
