Arsene Wenger: I said that I wanted better drug controls - and we got them straight away!

Arsenel Boss Arsene Wenger as revealed how a 10-man UEFA anti-doping squad swooped on Arsenal's training ground.

The Gunners' preparations for Saturday's match at West Brom, which they lost 2-1, were disrupted by the surprise visit the day before the game, with 10 players having to wait to give urine samples.

Boss Wenger revealed details of the raid, which he believed was the first in his 19 years at the club, as he criticised the punishment UEFA handed out to Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Arijan Ademi.

Starsport can reveal Ademi tested positive for Stanozolol, the anabolic steroid which cost Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson his 1988 Olympic 100m gold medal.

Macedonia star Ademi, 24, was handed a four-year ban after becoming the first player to test positive in the Champions League, after the Croatian side's shock victory over the Gunners in September.

Ademi played the full 90 minutes in his side's 2-1 win, but the result has been allowed to stand.

The teams meet at the Emirates tomorrow night but defeat in Croatia means Arsenal must win to avoid crashing out at the group stage for the first time in 17 years.
UEFA's anti-doping rules states two or more players must test positive for action to be taken against a club, despite only THREE players from each team being tested after matches.

"I don't remember we have been controlled before," said Wenger, who is understood to have been furious at the timing of UEFA's visit.

He added sarcastically: "I said that before that I want better controls - and we got better controls straight away!"

Wenger has called on UEFA to change its rules on drug cheats, saying the current regulations "basically accept doping".

Asked if he found the two-man guilty rule strange, Wenger said: "Yes, of course. It doesn't look logical, especially if you control (test) only three.

"It's a surprising rule. UEFA applies the rule that is planned, but I personally don't agree with the rule.
"You cannot say 'okay they had a doped player and the result stands'. That means you basically accept doping.

"I don't know if I would have the support of anybody, but I came out on that and as a result we had a doping control from UEFA on Friday.

"We had 10 people on Friday to control us."

BANNED: Ademi was hit with a four-year ban for failing his drugs test

Referring to Ademi he added: "I do not want to speculate too much on the career of a player. In between (the match in September and now) he has been punished.

"There are two things - our performance on the day and the fact that they had a doped player."

Dinamo were also visited by a UEFA anti-doping squad within 48 hours of Ademi's positive result, with 10 players tested. Ademi plans to appeal against the four-year ban.

The Association Against Steroid Abuse states: "The primary benefit(s) revolving around Winstrol (the trade name for stanozolol) are without question increases in strength which can relate to physical power, speed and agility."
