Death delivers deadly blows. It separates us from our families. It resurrects fear. It raises blame. When fear turns into everlasting pain then we cease to exist. For years you will suffer with anguish of loss and wish you could have done ‘something’ to save your beloved one from dying. But that will only increase the hurt – for we are just humans – we are all mortal bodies. We were created to vanish from this land one day.
But before we depart we must leave a legacy. And one day people will say indeed we lost a true model.
My father took the same path. I have accepted his sudden departure. And I will never get another father – never!
But I have learnt not to make pain permanent. I have displaced hurt with hope. Often when fear invades our lives we create an acceptance zone – an area where we admit fear and pain as normal. We say: ‘It is part of life’ – you are wrong! Pain will come but it must go. It is healthy to weep but not eternally. Fear and pain propagates failure. Yes, failure is acceptable because it is a recipe for success but it is not part of our inheritance. We were never created to become second – you are best. If you don’t shout it for yourself, no one will – that’s how we differ in life. No one is more equal than you!
My father adored outdoor life. He was a fisherman. But he preferred to lend a rod rather than giving fish. He bought me novels to read – it was my hobby. He saw something in me before he passed on. Today I am grateful because I can write a paragraph that can bring bread on the table. I live for information – communication has become my destiny. I was not the only one he assisted – many benefited.
Remember, it is not the multitudes that gather for your funeral that makes you an idol – some come for the feast. It is not flowers that will turn you into a saint – they shall wither. Those flattering graveyard speeches will not bring you salvation. Your expensive casket will turn to compost leaving you exposed. And those messages engraved on the tombstone will never cleanse you. We must all aim to build a clear defined legacy – a history that uplifts hope and relegate fear.
Today through my father I know my destiny. The pen is mightier than the sword – a pen uplifts and educate – a sword slays and destructs. I write for you and me – the common man. I don’t respect politicians because they have their own obese appetites to feed. I salute the ordinary because they struggle to fulfill their calling through challenging ways. Many will fail but those who prosper will do so with no skeletons to hide.
Let our lives be a museum of legacy where we can extract inspiration. Refuse to be a source of fear that vibrates with hatred and uncertainty. What you for the living do with your heart will live beyond your existence.
In death we must have hope, courage, legacy and memories – sweet memories! That is why we sing at funerals.
