A horrific case of gender-based violence has rocked the Midlands State University (MSU) community in Gweru. A 25-year-old fourth-year Psychology student, Lisedi Nkomo, was fatally shot in the forehead at a boarding house in Senga on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The prime suspect in the cold-blooded killing is her ex-husband, Godknows Muleya, a director of a Bulawayo-based security company, who is currently the subject of a massive nationwide police manhunt.

Beyond the tragic loss of life, the incident has drawn national shock due to the harrowing ordeal inflicted on the surviving students. After allegedly pulling the trigger, the heavily armed suspect confiscated the mobile phones of four of Lisedi’s friends, forced them into the blood-stained room with her lifeless body, and locked the door before disappearing into the night.

A Deadly Visit

According to official statements from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the tragic events unfolded on Thursday afternoon at a popular off-campus student accommodation in the Senga KMP area. Godknows Muleya, dressed in a hooded jacket, arrived at the property to visit his ex-wife.

3:00 PM: The Arrival National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the suspect arrived at the boarding house at approximately 3:00 PM. Witnesses report that a misunderstanding escalated between the former couple over the ensuing two and a half hours.
5:30 PM: The Fatal Shot At roughly 5:30 PM, the dispute turned deadly. Muleya allegedly produced a pistol and shot the 25-year-old first-semester, fourth-year student once in the forehead, killing her instantly.

Orphaned by Violence

A Mother Left Behind

The tragedy has left a devastating collateral impact. Lisedi Nkomo leaves behind an infant estimated to be eight or nine months old. The baby is reportedly currently staying with her paternal grandmother, forever deprived of a mother due to this senseless act.

The Hostage Nightmare

Immediately following the fatal gunshot, the suspect allegedly initiated a terrifying cover-up to facilitate his escape. Four other university students residing at the property were forced into a psychological nightmare.

Calculated Psychological Terror

Phones Confiscated and Destroyed

To prevent the girls from calling for emergency assistance, the hooded suspect forcefully confiscated their mobile phones. He threw the devices into a bathtub filled with water before ordering the terrified students to step into the blood-stained room.

Trapped and Pleading for Help

He locked the door from the outside, abandoning them with the body. Property caretaker Blessing Nkomo returned to find the front doors open but the interior door sealed. "My girls were crying and shouting, 'Auntie, things are not good here! Open for us!' They then told me that one of them was dead," she recounted.

Fearing the armed suspect might still be lurking on the premises, the caretaker rushed to seek police assistance. Officers soon arrived and, unable to locate the keys, were forced to use a crowbar to pry the door open and rescue the traumatized young women.

The Search for Godknows Muleya

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has classified Godknows Muleya as armed and highly dangerous. As the director of a Bulawayo-based security firm, authorities believe he possesses advanced knowledge of evasion tactics and firearms.

Crime Scene Evidence Forensic investigators processing the scene in Senga recovered a single spent cartridge, indicating the weapon was discharged once. They also retrieved a broken Itel mobile phone and a Samsung Galaxy A05s from the premises.
Civil Society Outrage Gender activist Locadia Mavhudzi strongly condemned the brutal killing. “No relationship is worth a human life. Love does not justify control, threats, intimidation, or violence,” she stated, demanding swift justice.

Sona Crime Desk News Analysis

The Escalating GBV Crisis:
The cold-blooded murder of Lisedi Nkomo is a grim reminder of Zimbabwe’s escalating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) crisis. The fact that this violence invaded an off-campus student residence highlights the terrifying vulnerability young women face even in spaces dedicated to academic pursuit. Activists are increasingly calling for stricter gun control laws and immediate psychological support mechanisms for victims of domestic threats.

Unprecedented Psychological Trauma:
While the physical violence claimed one life, the psychological violence inflicted upon the four surviving students is immense. Being forced into a confined space with the body of a murdered peer by a heavily armed assailant is an act of sheer terror. Midlands State University and local health authorities must prioritize intensive trauma counseling for these young women to help them navigate this profound psychological injury.

Security Industry Oversight:
The revelation that the suspect is a director of a Bulawayo-based security company raises urgent questions about the vetting and oversight of individuals entrusted with lethal weapons in the private sector. The misuse of an arguably licensed or accessible firearm to execute a domestic partner demands a rigorous review of how the private security industry regulates the personal conduct and mental fitness of its leadership.
