Fake Cops, Real Guns: Four Suspected Robbers Accused of Posing as Police to Steal Over US$168,000 from Harare Motorists

An audacious criminal syndicate has been brought before the courts after allegedly terrorizing Harare motorists by posing as Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers. Four men are accused of executing highly coordinated armed robberies, using the guise of law enforcement to handcuff, kidnap, and rob victims of more than US$168,000.
The accused—Trust Jimu (37), Tawanda Musendo (36), Evans Chimunsi (46), and Tafadzwa Matigimu (34)—recently appeared before Harare regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa facing three counts of armed robbery. They have been advised to seek bail at the High Court and were remanded in custody until October 22, while police hunt for a fifth accomplice who remains at large.
A Calculated Deception
Prosecutor Lawrence Gangarahwe laid out the gang's chilling and highly effective modus operandi in court. By exploiting the public's inherent compliance with law enforcement, the gang managed to disarm their victims without initially drawing a weapon.
The Airport Road Nightmare
The most lucrative and terrifying of the alleged robberies took place on April 26 at approximately 5:20 PM. Victims Tonderai Makaluwa and Nyasha Chiponda were sitting in a Toyota Auris at the intersection of Third Street and Josiah Chinamano Avenue when the fake cops struck.
The Kidnapping Timeline
After handcuffing the men under the pretense of a parking violation, the gang searched the vehicle and discovered a satchel packed with US$164,192. They immediately pivoted, accusing the victims of "money laundering," and forced them into the back seat.
One suspect drove the Auris, claiming they were heading to CID Headquarters. Instead, they drove around the city, eventually stopping near the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) offices on Herbert Chitepo Avenue, where they abandoned one of the victims to maintain the illusion of an official arrest.
The gang continued driving the second victim toward the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo Expressway (Airport Road). A suspect produced a pistol, pointed it at the victim, seized the cash-filled bag, and abandoned the terrified man on the side of the highway.
The Digital Extortion
The prosecution outlined another harrowing incident on July 15, exposing how the gang adapted their tactics to extract digital funds when physical cash was insufficient.
At around 6:00 PM, Oliver Tsongorera was sitting inside his Volvo at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Josiah Tongogara Avenue. The suspects approached him, flashed their bogus police credentials, handcuffed him, and searched the car.Crime Desk Analysis
A Dangerous Abuse of Public Trust:
The tactic of impersonating law enforcement is one of the most insidious forms of violent crime, as it weaponizes the public's instinct to comply with authority. By targeting stationary vehicles and feigning routine traffic or parking violations, these syndicates create a false sense of administrative trouble before rapidly escalating to armed robbery and kidnapping.
Carrying Large Sums of Cash:
The April 26 heist, which netted the gang over US$164,000, highlights a recurring vulnerability in Zimbabwe's heavily cash-reliant economy. Moving such vast sums of physical currency without professional security detail or armored transit presents an irresistible target for organized criminal syndicates, who often act on tipped information regarding the movement of funds.
Advice for Motorists:
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has repeatedly warned the public about bogus officers. Motorists approached by plainclothes individuals claiming to be police officers should remain inside their locked vehicles and demand to see valid, verifiable ZRP identification. If suspicious, drivers are advised to drive to the nearest official, brightly lit police station rather than complying with orders to step out of the vehicle in isolated or dimly lit areas.
