“His PhD Stopped Him From Touching Me”: The Chilling Suicide Note That Preceded the Dzivarasekwa Murder-Suicide
For years, they were the picture of suburban success. He was a brilliant engineer, university lecturer, and recently appointed ZHRC commissioner; she was a dedicated nurse at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital. But behind the closed doors of their Dzivarasekwa home, Lyliosa Chirara was living in what she described as a silent psychological prison.
Armed with a newly purchased axe from Mbare Musika and a lethal cocktail of rat poison, Chirara turned her husband's bedroom into what a friend later described at his burial as an "abattoir." Before she took her own life, she left behind a manifesto of her pain—a document that exposes the dark, elitist underbelly of their marriage and the agonizing catalyst of a second wife.
"His PhD Did Not Want Him To Have Sex With Me"
In her opening paragraphs, Chirara dismantled the public illusion of her peaceful marriage. “Admittedly, many think that I have peace of mind but that’s not true and I have only been suffering all my life while my husband was lying to people that he has a lot of love for me.”
She also detailed extreme financial control. She claimed Muduva kept his lucrative earnings completely private. When she attempted to gain financial independence by purchasing 500 chickens for an egg business, she alleged her husband forced her to sell them, stating he didn't want chickens at his upscale house.
“I’m crying, I’m suffering, murume avekundisema, kundisvipira mate nhasi nekuti ave nemari, akanganwa kwatakabva (my husband now hates me and spits on me because he now has money; he has forgotten where we came from),” she lamented.
The "Proper Wife" and the WhatsApp Betrayal
The suicide note corroborated rumors of Dr. Muduva’s second relationship with an MSU colleague, identified as Patience Mangwiro. Lyliosa alleged that her husband had spent an entire year living away from home with his girlfriend, only to return and deal the final psychological blow.
The breaking point came when Muduva formally married Mangwiro in a traditional Roora ceremony. Chirara claimed she was kept entirely in the dark. “He went to secretly marry the woman, he went with his relatives and I only learnt about it when I saw it on a status she posted about the Roora Day.”
The US$2,000 "Cheating Fine"
While the suicide note paints Lyliosa entirely as a blindsided victim, graveside revelations at Dr. Muduva's burial in Buhera added a complex layer to the story. Misheck Muduva, a family spokesperson, revealed that the family had conducted counseling sessions with Lyliosa and her sisters regarding the new marriage.
It appears the attempt to appease a deeply scorned and psychologically breaking wife with a cash "token" for cheating proved fatally inadequate. Lyliosa may have sat through the counseling, but her mind was already set on vengeance.
"I, the Fool, the Dog, the Waste, has Gone"
The suicide note reveals a woman oscillating between deep remorse for her impending actions and an intense, burning desire for revenge against the Muduva family.
However, her words toward her husband's family were laced with venom. She specifically called out an elder, 'Babamukuru Baba va Philip', accusing him of encouraging the new marriage and ignoring her previous cries for help.
“Babamukuru... be happy, all that you wanted has come to pass, you were the one encouraging Martin to get an educated wife... Now you can be happy that it’s done, go and take Patience Mangwiro, the one you went to marry secretly.”
In a chilling fulfillment of her marital vows, she concluded: “As I had vowed to Martin that our union would only be ended by death, this is the death that I meant.”
The Deadly Cost of Arrogance and Deceit
The suicide note of Lyliosa Chirara provides the final, tragic puzzle pieces to the Dzivarasekwa murder-suicide. It forces society to look at the ugly reality of marriages built on status but lacking in basic human decency. The allegations of being denied intimacy because she "lacked a PhD," being financially restricted, and finding out about a new co-wife via social media highlight a profound level of emotional devastation and patriarchal arrogance.
However, understanding her pain does not justify her final, fatal actions. In her profound grief and anger, she made the horrific choice to act as judge, jury, and executioner—butchering a brilliant mind with an axe before taking her own life, leaving three innocent children completely orphaned.
This tragedy must serve as a blaring siren for our society: paying a US$2,000 "token" does not heal betrayal. Toxic marriages do not fix themselves, and holding onto vows of "until death do us part" in an environment of total degradation will only lead to exactly that—death. If a marriage is over, walk away.
