ARTISTS CIVIL WAR! Mapfumo, Macheso & Fungisai Clash With Mono Mukundu Over Copycats
"Mukanya" has officially been joined by sungura giant Alick Macheso and gospel star Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave in a formidable alliance of legacy artists who are deeply unhappy with the rising trend of other performers monetizing their music and mannerisms.
The battle lines were drawn even clearer yesterday when Selmor Mtukudzi appeared to join the bandwagon, reacting to Fungisai’s impassioned social media video with a show of support. But on the other side of the battlefield stands top music producer Mono Mukundu, who has launched a scathing critique of the veterans.
"Jealousy and Insecurity"
Adding serious spice to this spectacular fallout, Mono Mukundu took to Facebook to explicitly label Mukanya and his crew as a group fueled by "INSECURITY" and "JEALOUSY."
“Why can’t we let the next generation rise?” Mono questioned in his post. “In other nations, older musicians groom the younger generation, share their knowledge, open doors and understand that their rise does not diminish their light. In Zimbabwe, we do the opposite. We insult the young, discourage their ambition, diminish their accomplishments and look for any reason to stifle their development.”
Fungisai Sparks a Fresh Storm
Yesterday, Fungisai took to social media, passionately claiming that her music, image, mannerisms, and entire artistic identity were being actively copied without her consent. She argued this goes far beyond simply performing a "cover" song.
“Imagine people impersonating you, replicating your music as is and gathering commercial value from your works without your consent?” she asked her followers. “Not even a ‘cover’ but note for note, word for word, every move and artistic mannerism... Ko kutozopfeka, kutamba nekuita everything kunge inini?”
Copyright vs. Passing-Off
Zimbabwe’s Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act [Chapter 26:05] gives copyright owners exclusive rights over certain uses of their work. If Fungisai or Mapfumo can establish that protected compositions, lyrics, or recordings have been reproduced without permission, they have solid grounds for an infringement claim, allowing them to seek remedies like damages or an interdict.
However, copyright does not automatically grant an artist ownership of an entire "style". A hairstyle, an outfit, a dance move, or a general stage personality are not automatically protected by copyright law.
Inspiration or Exploitation?
For the creative industry, this massive controversy raises a foundational question that will not disappear anytime soon: How much can one artist borrow from another before inspiration becomes outright exploitation?
Mono Mukundu is correct that artists need room to create, reinterpret, and compete without older generations gatekeeping the industry. However, creators like Mapfumo, Macheso, and Fungisai also desperately need meaningful protection when their legitimate intellectual property is used as a cheap commercial replacement. With Selmor Mtukudzi joining the veterans' corner and Mono holding the line for the youth, this civil war is only just beginning.
