The deadly collision, which occurred on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, involving a commuter omnibus (kombi) and a 30-tonne haulage truck near Hunyani Bridge, has since been declared a national disaster, plunging the nation into profound mourning.

Young Father and Toddler Among the Deceased

Among the seventeen confirmed fatalities are poignant cases of familial loss. Rainford Jere, a 29-year-old father from St Mary’s in Chitungwiza, tragically died alongside his 3-year-old daughter, Shantel Jere. Their deaths underscore the devastating impact of the accident on young families. 

Another family profoundly affected is that of Letwin Hwingwiri (52) and Talent Hwingwiri (18), both from St John’s Bhora in Murehwa, who also lost their lives in the horrific crash.

2. Wishby NGANIMA (19), a male adult from Nyatsime, Chitungwiza.
3. Letwin HWINGWIRI (52), a female adult from St John’s Bhora, Murehwa.
4. Frederick JUMO (39), a male adult from Stoneridge, Harare.
5. Shantel JERE (03), a female infant from St Mary’s, Chitungwiza.
6. Rainford JERE (29), a male adult from St Mary’s, Chitungwiza.
7. Prodigas MUGERE (37), a male adult from St Mary’s, Chitungwiza.
8. Tatenda DHOKWANI (25), a male adult from Damafalls, Ruwa.
9. Samantha TADERERA (27), a female adult from Zimre Park, Harare.
10. Sheilla NEMASANGO (58), a female adult from Nyatsime, Chitungwiza.
11. Samantha NYANGANI (32), a female adult from Unit P, Seke, Chitungwiza.
12. Emma MATARE (32), a female adult from Stoneridge, Harare.
13. Joshua GUTSA (07), a male juvenile from Stoneridge, Harare.

15. Anyway MAGUDURU (26), a male adult from Manyame Park, Chitungwiza.

The deceased comprise 10 females and 7 males. Their bodies have been transported to Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured survivors continue to receive medical care at the same institution.

Police Confirm Identities of Those Lost in Horrific Kombi-Haulage Truck Collision, National Mourning Continues

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has expressed its deepest condolences to all the bereaved families affected by this national tragedy. Commissioner Paul Nyathi affirmed that the police are conducting comprehensive investigations to determine the exact causes of the accident, which saw a haulage truck lose control and veer into the path of the kombi after striking two pedestrians.

Commissioner Nyathi issued a stern reminder to all drivers regarding road safety. He urged motorists to be extremely careful on the country’s roads, emphasizing that accidents like this one can often be avoided if vehicles are regularly serviced and mechanical issues are dealt with promptly.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police expresses condolences to the bereaved families. Meanwhile, the Police is conducting comprehensive investigations to determine the causes of the accident. Motorists are urged to be safety-conscious while driving on the country’s roads. Above all, vehicles should be regularly serviced and checked to address mechanical issues for road safety,” Commissioner Nyathi stated.
