Harare, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwean comedienne and social media personality Mai TT, real name Felistas Murata, has shared a remarkable and poignant revelation: her recent incarceration in 2023 became the unexpected crucible for her upcoming Nollywood film, "Lost In Ashes."
Mai TT disclosed that she spent sleepless nights in prison meticulously writing down personal stories, pain, and struggles that would later form the powerful inspiration for the movie's script.
This upcoming film project signals a significant transformation of personal adversity into a major artistic endeavor, marking Mai TT's foray into the highly influential Nigerian film industry.
"Behind bars, I would request that my husband, Shumba, purchase notebooks for me as I was writing stories — not just any stories, but my own stories, my pain, and my struggles," she wrote, painting a vivid picture of her determination.
Her dedication to documenting her experiences was so profound that it often defied the rhythms of prison life. "At midnight, while my fellow inmates slept, I would be awake and sometimes they would inquire as to when I would sleep. I would inform them that I had a vision to fulfill,” she recounted, underscoring her unwavering focus even amidst challenging circumstances.
However, the local project unfortunately faltered. "Upon my release, I presented my idea to a Zimbabwean producer, proposing a movie titled Jailbird. He expressed enthusiasm for the concept but subsequently delayed and made empty promises, leaving me disheartened but not defeated," she revealed, reflecting on the initial setback.
Undeterred by the domestic challenge, Mai TT's determination led her to seek opportunities beyond Zimbabwe's borders. She took her compelling story to Nigeria, a global hub for film production.
"I then traveled to Nigeria, where I shared my idea with a friend who, in turn, discussed it with some Nollywood actors. The response was overwhelming, with many remarking that the story was out of this world. They asked if it was true, and I confirmed that it was. After all was said and done, I am now here today," she narrated, highlighting the enthusiastic reception her true-life narrative received.
The project, now re-titled "Lost In Ashes," is currently in active production in Nigeria. Mai TT is not only taking on the lead acting role but is also serving as the executive producer, a significant dual role that underscores her deep personal investment in bringing her story to the screen. She reported that the team was on Day 3 of shooting, with only five days left before the editing phase is set to begin.
"Lost In Ashes" promises to offer audiences a raw and authentic portrayal of her experiences, showcasing how personal adversity can be transformed into a powerful narrative for the cinematic stage.
