In a surprising development, Adelaide Chikunguru, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), has resigned just two days after being suspended.
Chikunguru had been placed on suspension on Wednesday, pending disciplinary proceedings that were initiated against her.
The decision to resign comes in the midst of scandalous accusations leveled against Chikunguru, including allegations of financial mismanagement and poor corporate governance practices. There were also reports of her unprocedural employment by the then Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa at the state-owned broadcaster.
The ZBC Board officially confirmed Chikunguru's resignation in a statement released on Friday. As a result, Assael Machakata, the finance director, will continue to serve as the acting CEO until a permanent replacement is appointed.
According to the statement released by the ZBC Board, Chikunguru's resignation was a unilateral decision on her part, and it took effect on March 1, 2024. The statement also mentioned that Robson Mhandu, the Director of Radio Services who was suspended due to sexual harassment charges, has left ZBC after his fixed-term contract expired on February 29, 2024.
Mhandu's contract was not renewed, and he was informed in advance about the non-renewal. The statement emphasized that Mhandu's departure does not impact the ongoing inquiry by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, and the Corporation will consider any recommendations made by the Commission.
The resignations and departures at ZBC have raised questions about the leadership and management practices within the organization.
