Two security guards, Cornelius Muchikange and Nesbert Kachungwe (both 35), have been charged with theft after allegedly stealing money from the scene of a robbery at Quest Financial Services.
Details of the Robbery:
- A gang of robbers stole US$710,000 from Quest Financial Services.
- During their escape, they dropped a bag containing US$53,000, a grinder, detonators, and two laptops.
The Allegation:
- Muchikange and Kachungwe were part of the security response team that arrived at the crime scene.
- They allegedly found the bag containing US$53,000 and instead of reporting it, they decided to keep the money and split it amongst themselves.
Court Proceedings:
- Both Muchikange and Kachungwe pleaded guilty to the theft charges.
- Sentencing is expected to take place today (March 13, 2024).
Alleged Use of Stolen Money:
Muchikange reportedly used the stolen money for the following:
- Paid lobola (bride price) - US$2,500
- Purchased a Nissan Sulphy car - US$3,700
- Bought a residential stand - US$6,000
- Purchased a Nissan AD Van - US$6,100
- Bought building materials - US$1,000
Further Investigation:
Both Muchikange and Kachungwe claim they were approached by individuals posing as police officers who stole some of the remaining money they had.
