In a significant breakthrough, the Southerton Harare police announced the arrest of nine individuals suspected of being involved in armed robbery following a series of successful raids and a shootout.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi reported that the law enforcement agents had taken into custody Misheck Takawira Njowa (24), Jonas Daniel Mubaiwa (22), Shadreck Njowa (20), Job Nyashadzaishe Njowa (26), Cloudious Pemberengwa (39), Shepherd Magorimbo (30), Sydney Takavada (40), John Amon Ndlovu (34), and Godwin Chawaguta (33) in connection with several armed robbery cases in and around Harare between October 25 and December 13, 2023.
Providing details of the operation, Nyathi revealed that detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad received a tip-off leading to the arrest of Misheck, Shadreck, and Mubaiwa, who were suspected of being involved in a robbery earlier in the day. The incident involved the loss of a Toyota Porte vehicle, US$10, and a cellphone, which were taken from a taxi driver who had been hired to travel from central Harare to Southerton.
The detectives swiftly acted on the information and successfully apprehended the suspects at Dongo Village in Neshangwe, Sadza, leading to the recovery of the stolen vehicle. Additionally, an AK assault rifle, a cellphone, an electric shocker, two kitchen knives, cables, and a pair of handcuffs were seized during the operation.
Further investigations implicated Pemberengwa and Ndlovu, who were subsequently arrested at Duplex Flats in Old Highfield, Harare. This, in turn, led to the arrest of Magorimbo, Takavada, Job, and Chawaguta in Highfield, Glen Norah, Willowvale Flats, and Zengeza 5 Extension, Chitungwiza. The apprehension of these individuals resulted in the recovery of their getaway car, a Toyota Wish, along with a Vektor pistol containing a magazine of 8x9mm rounds and a .303 rifle with 6x7.5mm rounds.
The successful joint effort by law enforcement agencies has resulted in the removal of these suspects from the streets, effectively dismantling a significant part of the criminal network involved in the recent armed robbery cases. Assistant Commissioner Nyathi assured the public that these individuals will be facing the full force of the law as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
