Chamunorwa Muvhuti, an employee of Mohamed Mussa, has found himself in legal trouble after being arrested for stealing $195,000 from his employer and subsequently using the money to fund an extravagant lobola ceremony.
The shocking turn of events unfolded in Pfungwe, where Muvhuti was apprehended by the police while celebrating his marriage with his lover and family.
Following his arrest, Muvhuti appeared before a Harare magistrate and pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. Subsequently, he was remanded in custody as he awaits sentencing. In his defense, Muvhuti claimed that his decision to steal the money was driven by dissatisfaction with his wages, alleging that he was not adequately compensated in his role as a merchandiser.
The elaborate heist took place on December 21st, when Muvhuti, alongside his accomplices Chamunorwa Phineas Moyo and Jeremiah Kwenda, orchestrated the theft at Mohamed Mussa's premises. Muvhuti took advantage of an opportunity when he was left alone in the shop after his co-workers had departed for the day. Using a metal object, he broke into the safe, making away with the substantial sum of money. The crime was reported to the authorities the following day, leading to the arrest of Muvhuti's accomplices prior to the eventual apprehension of Muvhuti himself.
In a further turn of events, the police managed to recover a significant portion of the stolen funds, amounting to $186,000, from Muvhuti's residence in Chitungwiza. Additionally, Muvhuti was found to have made partial payments amounting to $4,426 to his in-laws for the lobola ceremony. However, only $3,501 of this sum was recovered by the authorities. Furthermore, groceries totaling $250, along with an additional $340 worth of supplies, were found at his in-laws' place. While the majority of the stolen money was recovered, not all of it has been accounted for, leaving the legal proceedings against Muvhuti ongoing.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences that accompany criminal actions, particularly when they involve breach of trust in an employment setting.
