Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-appointed Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has issued a bold response to the warning conveyed by party President Nelson Chamisa, instructing him to desist from using his image, indicating impending legal consequences.
Chamisa's recent formal request to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) urged the Commission to abstain from registering Tshabangu's candidates if they feature Chamisa's face as a part of their logo, alongside a threat of legal action, claiming non-permission for the use of his image.
In a compelling interview with Zenzele Ndebele on CITE’s The Breakfast Club, Tshabangu highlighted that he originally proposed using Morgan Tsvangirai’s face as the party's symbol during an MDC national council meeting. He asserts that this proposal was accepted and Tsvangirai's image was officially registered as MDC property.
Tshabangu argues that using Chamisa’s image is legitimate, as it is registered as the intellectual property of the CCC, not as Chamisa’s personal property.
Tshabangu firmly indicated, "He cannot use that face outside, unfortunately, the CCC." He further warned that if Chamisa persists, a legal battle will ensue, grounding his argument in the assertion that the image in question belongs to the CCC and not to Chamisa personally.
Expressing an unyielding stance, Tshabangu made it clear that while Chamisa has the freedom to depart from the CCC and establish another party, he cannot use his face as the party's symbol, emphasizing that it belongs to the CCC. Tshabangu exhibited confidence by expressing doubt that Chamisa, being a lawyer, would recklessly try to use the face as the symbol in forming another political party, hinting at a likely legal challenge if such an attempt is made.
The brewing clash over the usage of Chamisa's image sets the stage for a potential legal showdown, underscoring the complexity and divergence of views within the political landscape and the intricacies of intellectual property rights within the political domain.
