“He is Ours!” Zimbabweans Outraged As Publication Acknowledges Winky D As South African On Upcoming Bob Marley Album:
Zimbabweans have expressed their outrage over a mix-up that wrongly identified international award-winning artist Winky D as South African.
Reggae-dancehall star Winky D, together with hitmaker Nutty O, were featured on the upcoming album “Africa Unite: The Singles Collection” by the late legend Bob Marley.
However, Charts Africa, a music news website, posted a list of artists on the album and Zimbabweans are breathing fire.
Posting on its Twitter page, Charts Africa shared a list of all the artists featured on the album and their nationalities. Winky D’s name was accompanied by a South African flag instead of a Zimbabwean one.
The error sparked a backlash on social media, with many Zimbabweans accusing Charts Africa of disrespecting their country. Some also questioned the credibility of the website and its sources.
Check out some of their responses below.
Muller: “Winky D is from Zimbabwe. Musatijairire.”
My Backup: “Bro @funmud10 huyai muone mashure SA ikuda kutotitorera WinkyD maskati machena.”
Phanuel: “Excuse Us @chartsafrica since when did Winky D change his citizenship from Zimbabwean to South African….”
The album “Africa Unite: The Singles Collection” is a tribute to Bob Marley, who died in 1981 at the age of 36.
The album features some of his classic songs as well as remixes and collaborations with various African artists. The album is set to be released on August 4, 2023.
