Shortly after OceanGate’s Titan submersible suffered a devastating collapse, instantly claiming the lives of all five passengers on board, the mother of one of the victims shared her account.
Mrs Dawood revealed that she had originally intended to accompany her husband to witness the wreckage of the Titanic, but their plans were thwarted by the Covid pandemic.
During an interview with NBC’s Emilie Ikeda, she disclosed that her son Suleman Dawood had taken her place in the Titan submersible because he had a strong desire to go. Mrs Dawood said
“It was supposed to be Shahzada and me going down and then I stepped back and gave the space to Suleman because he really wanted to go.”

The 19-year-old had applied to Guinness World Records, and his father, Shahzada, who also tragically lost his life, had brought a camera to capture the memorable moment.
Mrs Dawood further recounted the final moments she shared with her husband and son. She emotionally recalled how they had hugged and joked.
“We just hugged and joked actually because Shahzada was so excited to go down. He was like a little child. I miss them. I really, really miss them,” Mrs Darwood’s voice trembled as tears welled up in her eyes.
While Christine Dawood and her daughter were aboard the Polar Prince, the support vessel for the sub, they received the devastating news of the communication loss with the Titan.
In addition to Suleman and his father Shahzada Dawood, three other individuals lost their lives on board: Stockton Rush, the 61-year-old CEO of OceanGate, the company that owned the Titan, British businessman Hamish Harding, 58, and Paul-Henry Nargeolet, 77, a renowned explorer and former French navy diver.
