UB40 Controversy Unfolds: Are They Really in the Country?

A viral snapshot on Twitter has thrown Zimbabweans into a whirlwind of confusion surrounding the renowned British band UB40.

The picture features a tweet from the official @ub40official account, demanding the removal of their name from a promotional poster for a supposed UB40 reggae extravaganza in Old Hararians scheduled for today.

In this tweet, UB40 cuts to the chase and clarifies that their former lead singer, Ali Campbell, bid adieu to the band more than a decade ago. The message leaves no room for doubt, stating,

“Please remove us from your post as this event has nothing to do with UB40. This is our ex-singer who left 15 years ago.”

Understandably, this picture has left Zimbabweans in a state of bewilderment, questioning whether they are being duped by the promoters of the UB40 show.

Communications Expert Sets The Record Straight on UB40

Fortunately, communications expert Ranga Mberi stepped up to the plate, taking to Twitter to shed light on the situation and clear the fog of confusion. Mberi skillfully unravelled the tangled web surrounding UB40’s identity crisis.

Mberi revealed that two brothers, Ali and Robin Campbell, both pivotal figures during UB40’s formation, experienced a significant falling-out in 2008, leading to the birth of two distinct UB40 entities.

Despite being siblings, they no longer communicate, and their feud runs deep.

Mberi even shared a video featuring Ali Campbell, wherein he elucidates the circumstances that gave rise to the existence of two UB40s, as witnessed on Australian television.

The video offers a glimpse into the intensity of their feud, with Robin divulging that Ali failed to attend their father’s funeral.

To provide clarity, Mberi stated, “For those interested, we have ‘two UB40s’: @UB40+@UB40OFFICIAL. Two brothers – Ali & Robin Campbell – original members, split in 2008. No longer talk. Ali, the most recognizable face of old UB40, is performing tonight in Harare with @UB40.”

UB40 Arrive In Zimbabwe For Harare Show:

In a related development, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Wednesday, setting the stage for their highly-anticipated performance today.

This show marks the end of a staggering 43-year wait for UB40, following their previous appearance in Zimbabwe way back in 1982.

The band will share the spotlight with an array of talented Zimbabwean artists, including Sylent Nqo, Josh Ashley, Mimmie Tarukwana, and DJ Chiwedar.
