Mbeu Accused Of Underpaying His Band Members

When contacted by H-Metro for comment, Liberty Magaya said he worked as a guitarist for Mbeu’s band Mhodzi Tribe.

He explained that he approached Mbeu to express his dissatisfaction with the compensation they were receiving, which was lower than what other guitarists are paid.

“I am one of his guitarists and we had an issue over payments. I confronted him and told him that the money he was giving us was little considering the work we were doing. He opened a rehearsal studio in Borrowdale and we were working together, doing rehearsals, twice per week. But, he was not paying us what we expected,” Liberty said.

According to Magaya, Mbeu was compensating them with a payment of US$20 for each rehearsal. However, when Mbeu was confronted about the payment, he became extremely angry.

The Mhodzi Tribe frontman then demanded that Liberty hand over his guitar, but Liberty refused to comply. In retaliation, Mbeu took Liberty’s Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 phone, hoping to force him to return the band’s uniforms.

Liberty then proceeded to report the matter to the police on Friday.

‘‘Guitarists get, at least US$50, and above, but he pays us US$20. I complained to him that we are doing more work and he got angry. He then demanded my guitar, which I refused to give him, before he took my phone, a Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, demanding the band’s uniforms back. I then reported the matter to the police since he took it on Friday,” Liberty added.

Efforts by H-Metro to get Mbeu’s side of the story were fruitless as he was not responding to calls and messages.
