In an unfortunate development, a bus from Tynwald School in Harare was involved in a horrific accident which resulted in 6 children losing their lives, on Friday night.
According to reports, the accident occurred when the driver of the bus failed to negotiate a sharp curve and crashed at Pine Tree Inn, close to Juliasdale in Nyanga. The driver lost control of the bus, which veered off the road and landed in a gorge, killing and injuring the passengers.
As of Friday night, 6 pupils were confirmed dead. 5 pupils died on the spot, while the sixth pupil was confirmed dead at Nyanga General Hospital. 39 others are reported to have been seriously injured in the accident.

Sources at Nyanga General Hospital told the weekly publication, the Manica Post, that the other injured accident victims are in critical condition. 46 pupils and teachers from Tynwald School, who were on a school trip, were on board the bus when the accident occurred.
The horrible accident was confirmed by a former cabinet minister and Nyanga South legislator Supa Mandiwanzira on Friday night.
Posting on social media, the Member of Parliament wrote,
“Many thanks to the Nyanga District Hospital staff led by DMO Dr John Muungani attending to [the] victims of a terrible school bus accident in Juliusdale, Nyanga this evening. Five lost their lives on the spot and one just passed on at the hospital.”
In another post, Supa Mandiwanzira said,
Heartfelt gratitude to the ambulance services at the Juliusdale School Bus Accident this evening. Their dedication and effort – Priceless. We owe you a lot.
Another source told the publication,
“It’s a terrible disaster. The Tynwald School bus, which had 45 passengers on board was involved in an accident, and so far six are confirmed dead. Five died on the spot and the other one on admission at hospital. Almost all the rest of the survivors were injured and taken to hospital,” said a police source privy to the accident. The accident occurred at Pine Tree Inn before Juliasdale. The bus was speeding and failed to negotiate a sharp curve, resulting in the fatal accident.”
In a statement released on Saturday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said,
FATAL ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INVOLVING A TYNWALD HIGH SCHOOL BUS AT THE 75 KM PEG ALONG RUSAPE-NYANGA ROAD:
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that six students comprising, five girls and a boy, from Tynwald High School died on 14th October 2022 at 1900 hours when the school bus which was on its way to a trip veered off the road and overturned at the 75 km peg along Rusape-Nyanga Road near Pine Tree Hotel.
The bus driver allegedly failed to negotiate a sharp curve resulting in the bus rolling several times on a steep slope. It then landed on its roof.
Thirty-nine other students and staff members were injured and are admitted at Nyanga District Hospital and Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. The bus had 46 occupants.
The names of the victims will be released in due course when their next of kin have been advised.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is conducting investigations with a view of establishing what happened in this sad and unfortunate road traffic accident.
