The English Premier League took to Twitter on Saturday to honour Mamelodi Sundowns Legend Peter Ndlovu following his contribution to the English top flight.
Zimbabwe’s Peter Ndlovu is among Africa’s greatest footballers who made an impact in the highly-rated English Premier League.
Ndlovu, the Mamelodi Sundowns team manager, became the first African player to grab a goal in the re-branded English top flight for Coventry City, on September 2, 1992, when his side won 2-1 against Sheffield.
As per tradition, the Premier League and its clubs celebrate the contribution that players of African and Caribbean descent have made throughout the league’s history during the month of October.
This tradition is done in October and it is dubbed ‘Black History Month.’
Taking to Twitter honouring Peter Ndlovu, the Premier League wrote:
“Peter Ndlovu will forever have the honour of being the Premier League’s first African player and goal scorer as part of an exciting Coventry City FC side.
“We’re celebrating iconic players from around the world who’ve starred in the PL as part of Black History Month.”
Speaking to BBC last September, the Mamelodi Sundowns legend Peter “Nsukuzonke” Ndlovu said it remains memorable for him to be remembered and honoured as the first African to play in the premier league.
“I’m sure I was told then, ‘Do you know that you’re the first African to play in the Premier League?’. I probably just said ‘OK’ and didn’t give it any more thought,” said Ndlovu.
“The thing for me was that I was just playing football.
“But when you see now, after all these years, it’s very special when you’ve started something for African players to come after me.
“I’m just so proud of all of them that they have made [the Premier League] better, and we can see that many of the big-money players (English clubs) are buying now are Africans.”
For Coventry City, Peter Ndlovu netted 34 goals from 154 appearances and is currently enjoying another successful career with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he is the team manager.
