South African standup comedian Trevor Noah has announced that he is quitting US late-night talk show The Daily Show.

Noah made the surprise announcement on last night’s episode of the Comedy Central show. He called it quits after an awards-filled seven-year stint on the show.

He did not specify when his final episode would air, adding that it will be announced later.

Speaking in a “special message” aired on The Daily Show YouTube page, Trevor Noah said:

“I realised that after seven years, my time is up. But in the most beautiful way, honestly. I’ve loved hosting this show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges. It’s been one of my greatest joys.

I’ve tried to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly sh**ty on the worst days. I’ve spent two years in my apartment, not on the road. You know, standup was done.

And when I got back out there again, I realised there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring. I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and putting on shows.

I want to say thank you to you, and to you who watch this and to you who come, and sometimes you do both. We’ll figure out the timings and whens. We’ll still be here for the time being.”
