Presidency Remembers Ma Winnie Madkikizela-Mandela On The Anniversary Of Her Death

Today, the 4th of April marks the anniversary of the death of Winnie Madkikizela-Mandela. The presidency posted a tribute to Ma Winnie on social media.

"Gone, but not forgotten. May your spirit live forever, Mama. #RememberingWinnieMandela"

Briefly.co.za learned that the caption on the post acknowledges the contribution she made to South Africa during challenging times and asks South Africans to draw inspiration from her selfless spirit.

"Today marks the passing of the Mother of the Nation, Mam' Winnie Madkikizela-Mandela. Along with other women of her generation, she kept hope alive when our country faced immense challenges.

As we did then, we draw strength and inspiration from her selfless spirit in our collective fight against the coronavirus."

South Africans paid their own tributes to Ma Winnie on social media:

@watu68550651: "May her spirit live forever. To all her detractors, any battle does have casualties in whatever form, that's history now."
@colleenlindys: "We will forever look up to the phenomenal woman that Mama Winnie was drawing exceptional strength, boldness, inspiration and drive from her. ❤️❤️❤️❤️"

In other news, Briefly.co.za remembered Joe Slovo who passed away on 6 January, 1995 after a lengthy battle with bone marrow cancer.
Slovo is famously remembered as the leader of the South African Communist Party (SACP), but he is credited as being one of the key figureheads on the road to reconciliation.

Slovo's ties with former president Nelson Mandela dates back to the 1940s as the pair attended the same class at Wits University.
