Former soccer star Ronaldinho could be held in police custody for up to six months pending investigations over his forged travel documents scandal.
The former Barcelona and AC Milan was arrested in Paraguay last week together with his brother and former manager Roberto Assis after they were caught with counterfeit travel documents. Appearing before in court over the weekend, the duo was denied bail with prosecutors arguing that they posed a serious flight risk if released from custody.

His lawyers are expected to appeal the decision to incarcerate him while a criminal investigation continues. But the maximum time for the investigation period is six months and the pair have been warned that there is very little guarantee they will be freed on bail until a decision on whether to try them is taken. Even if they are released, authorities are expected to order them to remain in the country until investigations are completed.
The 39-year-old is still held in police custody and was not transferred to jail because of his status as one of the world’s best talents to grace the soccer pitch. Appeals for house arrest were rejected because there wasn’t sufficient information provided on the house that the brothers were meant to be staying in.
According to Bloomberg, Ronaldinho’s passport was seized in November 2018 by authorities because of a lawsuit over alleged environmental crimes. Although the star received his travel documents back in 2019 after striking a deal with prosecutors, it was not immediately clear why he did not use his original travel documents.
