Lesotho’s First Lady Maesaiah Thabane has handed herself to the police more than a month after fleeing the country following reports of her alleged involvement in the killing of Lipane Thabane, Prime Minister Thomas Thabane’s former wife.
The fugitive who reportedly fled from law enforcement officers in a dramatic escape last month is reported to have turned herself over to the police yesterday.
Reports reaching Mhepo News from the BBC have revealed that Maesaiah Thabane turned herself in for questioning on Tuesday on the border with South Africa after an arrangement between her lawyers and police. She is now in police custody and is to be formally charged in court on Wednesday for allegedly killing Thomas Thabane’s previous wife.
It is not clear if Maesaiah Thabane will apply for bail at the court appearance.
In an article published last month, the publication revealed that Maesiah Thabane fled police attempts to question her on the shooting of her rival after overwhelming evidence of her hand in the killing was discovered. Consequently, a warrant was issued for the 42-year-old on 10 January after she disappeared.
Lipolelo Thabane, was killed outside her home in the capital Maseru two days before Thomas Thabane’s 2017 inauguration after being ambushed, shot several times at close range. The couple were involved in bitter divorce proceedings at the time.
