The government has cancelled the press conference which was scheduled for this morning on Winky D’s Njema Album launch.
The press conference was supposed to be addressed by Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe at the Mkwati Building.
This comes after reports that the President Emmerson Mnangagwa government was unhappy with the Zimdancehall maestro for his social commentary and wanted to have the album banned. According to a leaked document, Winky D’s music has come under attack for its political connotations. Some elements within the government want him to apply for police clearance for his album launch arguing that it is a political gathering. The album is scheduled to be launched at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) tonight.
Last night, ZRP National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed reports of Winky D’s arrest saying his team had been called for a consultative meeting ahead of launch. Speaking to H-Metro, Nyathi said,
The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to put the record straight with regards to Winky D and his manager. Winky D’s manager wasn’t arrested and neither was Winky D as reported on social media.
A consultative meeting was held with Winky D’s manager Banda after Censorship Board raised a complaint about his failure to follow necessary procedures according to Section 16 of the Censorship Board and Entertainment Control Act.
The procedure gives the musician a legal document that will not disturb the launching of his album, hence, it was resolved that the manager would follow the procedure ahead of the launch.
The complaint raised by the Censorship Board came after members of the public approached them over some of the lyrics they claim are in a bad taste for public consumption,
The cancellation of the press conference seems to have been a response to massive backlash fro Zimbabweans online who accused the government of hypocrisy and dirty hands. They highlighted how Winky D is being targeted yet Jah Prayzah’s songs which also had political connotations were feted and played at public events. In fact, Jah Prayzah’s “Kutonga Kwaro” became the official anthem for the November 2017 Military coup.

The critics also highlighted that Chief Shumba’s song “ED Pfee Mwanangu” was never banned despite the fact that it is clearly political.
