The Zimbabwean government has outlawed the installation of electric geysers as it desperately seeks new ways to conserve electricity.
The country has been plagued by a debilitating shortage of electricity which has resulted in intensive power blackouts as load shedding can last for up to 18 hours a day.According to the new Statutory Instrument which was issued by the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, all new buildings will have to be fitted with solar geysers and those who need electric geysers will need to apply for a special exemption.
The Energy Ministry is reported to have previously said that electric geysers consume 280MW and account for 40% of household power consumption.
