Trump Sends Macron Another Warning as Tension Erupts on Paris Trip – ‘A Burden!’

The US President stated the over-reliance Europe has on the US and called for “fair” and “efficient” system with the bloc taking greater responsibility, after a tense meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Speaking in France ahead the 100th anniversary of the end of World War one, Mr Trump said: “We want a strong Europe, it’s very important to us and whichever way we can do it the best and more efficient would be something we both want.

“We want to help Europe but it has to be fair. Right now the burden sharing has been largely on the United States.”

His remarks come after Mr Macron earlier this week backed a “real European army” to defend Europe from external threats including the US.

Mr Macon said: “We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America.”

He added: “”When I see President Trump announcing that he’s quitting a major disarmament treaty which was formed after the 1980s euro-missile crisis that hit Europe, who is the main victim? Europe and its security.”

Landing in the French capital yesterday the US President called Mr Macron’s remarks “very insulting”.

The US President tweeted: “President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China and Russia. Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the US subsidises greatly.”

Speaking today in Paris, Mr Macron reiterated his defence proposals for Europe and shared Washington’s view that Europe needed to do more.
He said: “I am obviously going to share with President Trump the proposals made on Europe’s strategic defence capabilities and the need for a Europe that is able to take on more of the common burden at the heart of NATO.”

He added: “That’s why I do believe my proposals for European defence are fully consistent with that.”

The pair will be joined by around 70 world leaders in Paris celebrating 100 years since the end of World war one.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will also be among world leaders marking Armistice day in France.

The US president described the war between 1914-1918 as “the bloodiest and worst of all time” on social media.

On Twitter Mr Trump wrote: “I am in Paris getting ready to celebrate the end of World War One. Is there anything better to celebrate than the end of a war, in particular that one, which was one of the bloodiest and worst of all time?”
