Biya Calls On Amba Fighters To Lay Down Their Arms – Or Face Might Of Law, Military

The newly sworn-in President of the Republic of Cameroon, Paul Biya, has called on the Ambazonian Fighters in the Northwest and Southwest Regions to lay down their arms or face the full force of the law and the military.

Paul Biya made the statement on November 6 in Yaounde, shortly after taking the oath of office as his seventh term as President of Cameroon begins. He appealed to the youths who are involved in what he termed ‘futile adventure’, to get back on the right track.

“These war-mongers who are jeopardising our national unity and preaching secession should know that they will face not only the full force of the law but also the determination of our defence and security forces. I am calling on them to lay down their arms and get back on the right track. I am appealing, particularly, to youths who got involved in a futile adventure,” Biya stated.

He also pointed out that: “It is obvious that the secessionist ambition undermines our constitution which establishes the ‘indivisible’ nature of our Republic.”

He further stated: “I have no doubt, whatsoever, that the destiny of our compatriots in the Northwest and Southwest lies within our Republic. With the support of the Cameroonian people, as a whole and convinced that there is an honourable way out in everyone’s interest, I will strive to restore peace and calm in the two Regions concerned, with due respect for the institutions of which I am the guarantor.”

Acknowledging the fact that threats from ‘secessionists’ made them unable to exercise their right to vote during the Presidential election and, thereby, express their attachment to national unity, he called on the people not to lose hope and to lend all possible support to the action of the authorities aimed at restoring peace.

Fight against Boko Haram

Concerning the fight against Boko Haram in the Northern Regions of the country, Biya hailed security forces as well as the international community for pushing the enemy away but urged Cameroonians to be vigilant.

“Our defence and security forces, to whom I once more pay tribute, chased the enemy out of our borders. The situation is now stable, but we remain vigilant and determined,” he said.

Talking about his new seven-year mandate, Biya said: “We will strive to consolidate our achievements while exploring new avenues that will enable us to make use of all the opportunities offered by an ever-changing world. In this light, we will naturally pursue our structural reforms to consolidate our fiscal balance and bolster our debt sustainability. A healthy financial situation is a sine qua non for economic and, hence, investment attractiveness.”

In the area of Agriculture, he said a veritable “agricultural revolution” would be staged by modernising production tools and further processing agricultural products.

To him, this should be accompanied by the acquisition of new equipment, and the construction of warehouses and access roads and the country’s status as the breadbasket of Central Africa will be consolidated.

For the energy sector, he said: “We will continue to exploit all the available sites and rivers in order to transform Cameroon into a major electricity producer on our continent. We will also pay attention to rural areas by progressively providing them with solar energy plants.”

He said Government would continue to develop transport infrastructures such as roads, ports and airports to boost the economy and facilitate communication with Cameroon’s neighbours.
Observing that the ultimate goal of democracy is to provide the highest number of people with the best living conditions possible and real equal opportunities, he promised, among other things, to promote the role of women in society; facilitate the social integration of youths by further developing the educational system at all levels and focusing on professionalisation and fighting against exclusion, notably by providing better protection to persons with disabilities.

He also said he would improve access to public drinking water and electricity; enhance the health system by building new hospitals and finalising an efficient social security system and develop a good social housing policy.

Urging youths not to lose hope, since he had understood their aspirations for change that will open the door to the future and enable them to complete personal fulfilment, he said he has also recognized their desire for greater participation in taking decisions that concern the destiny of the country.

Biya concluded that Cameroon can only confidently embrace progress and modernity by staying united and proud of its democratic, economic and social advances.
