Maurice Kamto's Victory and The Complex Position Of The Francophones

In the wake of the presidential election, “The Secretary-General invites all stakeholders, including the candidates, to contribute to preserving social peace and urges them to privilege, in all circumstances, the legal channels,” says a statement of OIF.

The Cameroonians went to the polls on Sunday, October 7, 2018. For now, they are waiting for the results of the first round that should be pronounced by the Constitutional Council in a fortnight. But that did not stop Maurice Kamto, one of the main challengers of the outgoing President Paul Biya (in power for 36 years) to claim last Monday the victory. In addition, 17 appeals to the Constitutional Council have, for the moment, been lodged by candidates.

In this context, Michaëlle Jean, the Secretary General of the Francophonie says “to follow with great attention and through the mission of information and contacts it has deployed in Cameroon, holding the presidential election in this Member State “.

The organization of the countries sharing the French language recalled that it “mobilized for several months a multiform technical and political support to accompany the electoral process in Cameroon." adding that the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General, Désiré Kadre Ouedraogo, former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso and former President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led a mission to information and contacts".
