Tanzania’s billionaire Mohamed Dewji has been released after he was taken hostage over a week ago by unidentified gunmen in the country’s capital Dar es Salam.
43-year-old Mohammed Dewji, reputed as Africa’s youngest billionaire heads the MeTL Group which operates in about ten African countries with interests from agriculture to insurance, transport, logistics and food industry.
Dweji in a press conference on Saturday in Dar es Salam where he was abducted says it is thanks to divine intervention that he was released.
“I thank Allah that I have returned home safely. I thank all my fellow Tanzanians, and everyone around the world for their prayers. I thank the authorities of Tanzania, including the police force for working for my safe return.”

He says “Mohamed Dewji told us the abductors wanted money but were very afraid, even though they were armed. He asks them several times how much they wanted but they gave no figure.”
Though the victim gave no hints on where he was taken to and whether or not a ransom was paid to secure his release, he noted that the kidnappers spoke a southern African language, confirming suspicions that the kidnappers were foreigners.
