The UN high commissioner for human rights Michelle Bachelet in her first address to the human rights council since she took office, condemned the escalation of violence in the anglophone regions of Cameroon.
In her opening statement at the 39th session of the Human Rights council on September 10, 2018, she singled out a number of African countries including Cameroon, Egypt, and Mali. With the exception of South Africa, every other bloc of the continent had a share of rights violation.
In Cameroon, Madam Michelle Bichelet emphasized on the worsening Anglophone crisis and strongly condemned the atrocities the crisis has so far brought to the economy of country. Reports of killings and abductions of teachers and students and the destruction of schools by armed elements in the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon were highly criticized by the UN’s High Commissioner for Human rights.

She therefore urged a swift and effective action to ensure all human rights violations are held accountable.
She also makes mention of the fact that the Government has not acted to promote the conference on dialogue suggested by religious leaders and there is still no mechanism in place which could envisage a halt in hostilities in the short term.
However, she highlighted that the Government has opened investigations into several atrocious crimes apparently committed by members of the military and urges the government to address key grievances in order to foster peaceful resolution of this crisis.
