Cameroon has featured prominently in the list of what the United Nations describe as sate with records of “shameful” reprisals of activists.
The annual report from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also included allegations of ill treatment, surveillance, criminalization and public stigmatization campaigns targeting victims and human rights defenders.
“The world owes it to those brave people standing up for human rights, who have responded to requests to provide information to and engage with the United Nations, to ensure their right to participate is respected,” Guterres wrote.
“Punishing individuals for cooperating with the United Nations is a shameful practice that everyone must do more to stamp out.”
The 38 countries included 29 countries with new cases, and 19 with ongoing or continuing cases.

The country which is featuring on this shameful list for the first time has been leading another UN backed lists of most corrupt countries in the world.
According to Transparency International, the international anti-corruption watchdog, the three times former world corrupt champion Cameroon still remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world even though great strives have been made to fight the cankerworm in recent years
The country was the 27th most corrupt country in 2017 corruption perception index in a studies across 180 countries across the globe.
Cameroons addition in the list of top rights violators comes after two years of Anglophone crisis which rights groups have accused the country’s security forces of massive human right violations in the Restive Anglophone regions of the country.

Online videos surfacing where soldiers are allegedly killing civilians at close range including children as young as 6 months back in the country’s fight against Boko haram in the far North region has further generated massive outcry at home and abroad, plummeting the country’s human rights record.
