President Mnangagwa says he’s in talks with the main opposition party leader. Nelson Chamisa in order to defuse the tension and restore calm over Monday’s presidential election.
Violent clashes between soldiers and civilians which erupted since Wednesday as results from the Electoral Commission are being delayed have left three people dead on Harare’s streets.
The president through his Twitter handle, extend condolences to the families of the victims of this violence clash. ”I am therefore callinf for an independent investigation into what occurred in Harare yesterday. We believe in transparency and accountability, and those responsible should be identified and brough to justice” Mnangagwa wrote.
The ZANU-PF, Mnangagwa’s ruling party have already secured a majority of seats in parliament. He’s caling for unity and the peaceful settlement of political differences.
Following the delay by Zimbabwe’s electoral commission that presidential election results will be released until Thursday, supporters of the opposition clashed with police on Wednesday.
Nelson Chamisa had earlier declared victory on Twitter and said the delays in announcing the results, were the ZANU-PF’s attempt to thwart the people’s will. ”We have won the popular vote. You voted for total change in this past election! We have won this one together. No amount of results manipulation will alter your will” he tweeted on Wednesday just before clashes erupted in Harare.
International observers from the United States and European Union are urging the electoral commission to release the results of the presidential elections. The say further delays undermine the credibility of the voting process.
