The 85-year old President of the central African country of Cameroon, Mr. Paul Biya, announced on Friday that he will be running for a seventh term of seven years in office in October.
He has been in power since 1982.
The election is scheduled on October 7.
Mr. Biya has been in power for 36 years since his predecessor retired in 1982 and has ruled with an iron fist, controlling the executive, legislature and judiciary with absolutism.
He will be running for another term of seven years and would be well above 90 years old when the new term ends in 2025.
Only Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled uninterrupted for longer.
“I am willing to respond positively to your overwhelming calls. I will stand as Your Candidate in the upcoming presidential election,” Biya said in a tweet on Friday.
Biya has ruled virtually by decree since taking office. He scrapped term limits from the constitution in 2008, sparking riots that left over 40 people dead.
This time, his announcement is coming even as the country battles Boko Haram in the North and a separatist group rages in the south and north west regions.
