Zimbabwean Oppositions Calls For Grace Mugabe To Face The Law In South Africa

Opposition MPs in Zimbabwe are calling on their first lady, Grace Mugabe to apologise to South Africans and return to the country to face justice over her alleged assault of a model.

The first lady and President Robert Mugabe returned to Zimbabwe Sunday morning. President Mugabe attended the SADC summit in Pretoria, but Mrs Mugabe hasn't been seen in public since the alleged attack.

Grace Mugabe landed on home soil on Sunday morning after being granted diplomatic immunity in South Africa.

Zimbabwean MPs attending the burial of Minister Shuvai Mahofa insist the first lady should be dealt with in terms of the law. She's accused of using an extension cord to beat a young South African woman.

“The first lady needs to apologise for what she did. It's something which she cannot defend. As a nation we should respect human rights. This won't do us any good as a nation. I apologise to the South Africans,” an independent Zimbabwean MP, Temba Mliswa said.

But President Mugabe's nephew, Patrick Zhuwao, who is the Minister of Youth, angrily dismissed questions about his aunt's alleged bad behaviour.

“No, I can't answer your question my brother. I'm not answering anything as a family member, I am here as a minister. I don't want to talk about what is happening in South Africa or what is happening in America, because I wasn't there. People who comment on that are fools because they were not there,” said Zhuwao.

South Africa's International Relations Department says it considered the need to maintain good inter-governmental relations within the SADC region when making its decision.

But many Zimbabwean locals say the diplomatic immunity granted to Mugabe is a disgrace.
