Nigeria Signs Repatriation Agreement with Cameroon and UNHCR For Safe Return Of Over 85, 000 Refugees

The Federal Government has signed a multilateral agreement with the Government of Cameroon and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the voluntary repatriation of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon.

There are over 85, 000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon. These refugees fled to the country due to the insurgency in the northern part of Nigeria caused by Boko Haram.

According to BBC, out of the 85,000 refugees in Cameroon, about 62,000 of them who are in the refugee camp of Minawao in the extreme North of Cameroon have expressed their readiness to return home.

But the Nigerian Minister of the Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, insists that the return should not be accelerated so as to avoid any hiccups.

The UNHCR recently voiced its resentment at the forced return of several Nigerians from Cameroon. Due to this, the Cameroonian authorities, therefore, want to be more observant with the repatriation.
