Cameroon – Anglophone Crisis ... Police Arrested New People In Bamenda (North-West)

The events date back to Saturday, March 18, 2017. The police had organized a raid operation. The persons arrested are in operation at the regional division of the Judicial Police of the North-West.

In its March 21, 2017 edition, the daily Le Jour reports that several dozen people were arrested during a raid organized by the police. The operation, which took place on March 18, 2017, took place in two districts of Bamenda, North West Region. These include New Church Azire and Metta. The newspaper said that access to these districts was blocked early in the morning. Law enforcement officials asked passers-by to show their National Identity Card (NIC).

“Everyone who came out this morning without a national identity card was systematically arrested and held until their status was proved,” it wrote.

The situation was frightening for the populations of those neighborhoods who preferred to stay in their homes. This was of no avail because the police officers searched the homes of the inhabitants.

Those who paid the most for this operation are the motorcycle taxi drivers. They are suspected of “feeding the ranks of the vandals who set fire to various places in the Region and maintain fear among the population“, reports the newspaper.

On the police side, an officer said it was a “police operation“. It was therefore possible and normal for the police to seize dangerous objects and also to appeal to persons who could harm the safety of men and property. It was at the regional division of the North West Judicial Police that the persons arrested were taken for exploitation.
