Students of some Faculties at the University of Buea (UB) have timidly resumed classes according to sources in Buea.
The resumption, we gathered started since last Monday, February 13th mostly by Francophone students and Francophone lecturers.
No official source at the University called for the resumption of classes given that UB is part of SYNES which is part of the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC) which called for educational and political reforms, insisting on a return to a two-state federation. Their stance has since shifted to the outright restoration of the statehood of the former British Southern Cameroons. The Cameroon Journal could not reach any authority in Buea for comment on the surreptitious commencement of classes at Anglophone Cameroon’s largest university. The University of Buea was the hotspot of violent clashes between soldiers and unarmed students who were protesting the payment of late admission fees late in 2016.
However, it is not clear if the current, timid resumption of classes by mostly Francophone students and their French-speaking lecturers is politically-motivated. Most Francophones all over the NW and SW Regions have constantly shown disregard for the struggle by their Anglophone counterparts.
