Cameroon – Anglophone Problem: The Internet Ban Has Already Led To A Loss Of 500 Million FCFA To The Companies, According To The NGO Internet Without Borders

This non-governmental organization (NGO) notes that if the Cameroonian authorities suspended the Internet in a context of political protest, the problem now goes beyond the violation of citizens’ rights.

Since January 17, 2017, the date of the interruption of Internet, losses are valued at nearly half a billion CFA francs, according to the NGO Internet without Borders, which is fighting for freedom of expression online.

“It believes that entrepreneurship is threatened in the North-West and South-West Regions, where the salary bill is mainly paid by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),” APA quotes.


In its report, Internet without Borders is particularly concerned about the city of Buea, the capital of the Southwest Region, home to the only refinery in the country, the National Refining Company (SONARA) located in Limbe.

While the Internet connection has not yet been restored in these regions, the trial of Mancho Bbc, Nkongho Agbor Balla and Dr. Fontem, presented as the leaders of the Anglophone crisis, due to open on 1 February at the military court Yaounde, is postponed to 13 February.

Eight counts are against them. It is hostility against the homeland, secession, civil war, revolution, armed band, propagation of false news, attacks on public agents of the state and collective resistance. They risk the death penalty under the Terrorism Act of 23 December 2014.
