Underage girls’ originally from Chingwizi have formed a posse operating along the Beitbridge Masvingo highway as prostitutes.
Chingwizi was affected by floods in 2015. Many people were displaced and on the receiving end were mostly women and young children- especially the school going age who found life becoming a nightmare. With such a background, the girls say they are doing the best they can to survive.
It turns out they have become a hit on the highway as truckers and other clients flock to them for good and affordable services. Hence, their crew now has a name and reporting structure. Their leader, a 17-year-old girl whose trade name is Aunty Nomusa which loosely translates to an aunt with warmth and kindness’ said they are known as the Yellowbone crew and for one to be a member despite coming from Chingwizi should be light-skinned.
“We were six when we started but now we add up to 20,” she told B-Metro. The average age group of the clique is 15 years because young blood is in demand. Men prefer us to older se_x workers because we are fresh and energetic to satisfy customers. Those old aged pr_ostitutes are now out of business,” said another one who identified herself as Rutendo.
Rutendo blames the authorities from her predicament.
“They dumped my parents in the middle of the jungle without giving them resources and money to start a new life. They can’t provide for me that’s why I have resorted to pros_titution,” she added.
Despite being prostitutes, they face other hurdles such as abuse at the hands of clients who take advantage of them.
“We can’t stand up for ourselves like older prostitutes do that’s why at times clients plainly refuse to pay us or even threaten us with violence,” she added. However, there are some in the communities along the highway who feel the situation will get worse because younger girls admire material things that the Yellowbone crew has.
“Things are tough and more girls and even old villagers could join in because of poverty,” said Tongai Mukumba from Sese village. Kurai Gambiza from Ngundu village is worried that there could be a spike in se-xually transmitted diseases and HIV that will worsen the region’s poverty situation and also increase child headed families whose offspring will amount to criminals and prostitutes. Community leaders have called on government to address the situation as young girls were prone to se_xually transmitted infections including HIV and AIDS.
“Government must introduce stiff measures to curb this situation because these children’s right to education is being violated,” he said.
