The Sudanese-born supermodel was thrilled to finally be able to meet the '12 Years a Slave' actress, who has been vocal about her love for Alek in the past, even paying tribute to her during a speech at Essence's Black Women in Hollywood awards in February.
“I just remember seeing you on the cover of a magazine; I don’t even know which magazine it was, but there was no apology in you.
You were just who you were and that was…I’d never seen it before. It was just like, how is this working? That she’s just who she is and she’s on the cover of these magazines? I’d never seen anyone like me on the cover.
This is really a dream come true sitting here with you and talking about beauty and just character. I know you never knew I existed until I came onto the scene wit this thing, but I think that’s the wonderful thing about being in some sort of public eye. You can affect and inspire people without knowing it. Your work is done and you have no idea. That’s really powerful so thank you for being that for me.” – Lupita as spoken to Alek Wek
In February at the Essence Magazine Black Women In Hollywood luncheon, Lupita stated that she was once insecure about her dark black skin until she saw a beautiful, black as midnight supermodel who looked like her gracing the covers of magazines. That model was Alek Wek. People Magazine arranged for the two women to meet over tea and experience this moment of unity and empowerment. #YouAreBeautiful
