Viewers of the 2016 Grammy Awards might have noticed one of the major performers did not take the stage Monday night.
That's because “FourFiveSeconds” singer Rihanna, who performed with Sir Paul McCartney and Kanye West last year, dropped out. The Barbadian beauty did not perform at the 58th awards show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles because she was put on “vocal rest” by her doctor.
“Based on Rihanna’s examination after Grammy rehearsal today, Rihanna’s doctor put her on vocal rest for 48 hours because she was at risk of hemorrhaging her vocal cords,” her reps said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “The antibiotics she has been on for three days did not kill the infection adequately, therefore she cannot perform safely.”
Performers like Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Stevie Wonder, Carrie Underwood and Little Big Town took the stage, as scheduled.
Though Rihanna, 27, and her team apparently knew her performance was going to be canceled before the ceremony started, her statement wasn’t released until the middle of the Grammys.
She recently performed Lionel Richie’s hit, “Say You Love Me,” at the MusiCares Gala Saturday. In turn, the "Hello" singer peformed with Demi Lovato, Meghan Trainor, Tyrese and John Legend Monday.
Rihanna didn’t tweet about experiencing difficulties with her vocal cords on her official Twitter page. Instead, she promoted her endorsement with Puma.

“Anti,” her eighth studio album hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. “Work,” the first single to be released from the album, which features Drake, is currently No. 7 on the Hot 100.
